“Esmond” Garden 70 x 70

Trade blankets are by default very beautiful. I am a particular fan of Esmond Mills from Rhode Island. Bandannas were also produced in Rhode Island for a long time as well. Trade blankets are a major cultural symbol of American history and the West. These beautiful designs originate from traditional Native American basket weaving, beadwork and weaving techniques. They have a strong affiliation with a variety of cultural topics but for this one Yurika and I designed this one around a Esmond blanket. Fiddling with the colors a bit to get them to how we think they would really shine, we have matcha green, indigo blues and rusty reds. A nice combination of Japanese colors and American history. 

トレードブランケットって、もともとめっちゃ綺麗なもんやねん。中でも俺はロードアイランドのEsmond Millsの柄が特に好きやわ。ロードアイランドでは昔からバンダナもよう作られとってな。トレードブランケットは、アメリカの歴史とか西部文化を語る上で欠かされへん大事なカルチャーの象徴やと思う。あの美しい柄も、ネイティブアメリカンの伝統的なバスケット編みやビーズワーク、織りの技法なんかが元になっとるねん。いろんな文化的背景と深い繋がりがあるんやけど、今回はその中でも、ユリカと一緒にEsmondのブランケットをベースにデザインしてみたわ。色味もちょいちょい調整して、「これが一番映えるやろ」って感じに仕上げてん。抹茶みたいな緑、藍っぽい青、それに錆びた赤。日本らしい色合いとアメリカの歴史がええ感じに混ざった組み合わせになったと思うで。
