“Sun and Plant” — Aniline Black 70 × 70 cm

In all honesty, I’m still amazed by how this design came together. When Satoshi first showed me the concept, I knew it was something special, but watching it evolve into the finished bandanna has been a real pleasure.The inspiration comes from traditional tattoos from the Philippines, built around two simple motifs: a sun and a plant. Around them, we created an arrangement of dots and lines that reminds me of some of my favorite indigo bandannas from the 1920s.The colors were just as important as the design itself. The aniline black was inspired by black bandannas from the late 1800s, while the beige was chosen to recreate the soft, muted appearance of old discharge-printed fabrics. They’re subtle details, but together they give the bandanna a warmth that feels familiar and fresh.I love vintage textiles, but I’ve never been interested in simply copying them. The goal has always been to learn from the past and create something that feels like it could belong there, without pretending it actually came from there.To me, that’s exactly what this bandanna is: a respectful nod to history, but an original design with its own story to tell.

正直なところ、このデザインがこうして形になったことには、今でも驚かされています。最初にSatoshiからこのアイデアを見せてもらったときから「これは何か特別なものになりそうだ」と感じていましたが、そこから少しずつ形を変え、ひとつのバンダナとして完成していく過程を見ることができたのは、本当に楽しい経験でした。インスピレーションの源になったのは、フィリピンの伝統的なタトゥー。太陽と植物という、シンプルな2つのモチーフを中心に、周囲にはドットやラインを組み合わせています。その雰囲気には、僕が特に好きな1920年代のインディゴバンダナからも影響を受けています。色もデザインと同じくらい重要でした。アニリンブラックは、1800年代後半のブラックバンダナから着想を得たもの。そしてベージュには、古いディスチャージプリントの生地に見られる、柔らかく落ち着いた表情をイメージしています。どちらも決して目立つ要素ではありませんが、この2色が組み合わさることで、どこか懐かしさを感じさせながらも、新鮮な印象を持つバンダナに仕上がりました。僕はヴィンテージのテキスタイルが大好きですが、過去のものをそのままコピーしたいとは思っていません。昔のものから学びながら、まるでそこに昔から存在していたかのように感じられるものを、でも決して「昔のもの」だと偽ることなく、自分たちのデザインとして作る。それがずっと目指していることです。僕にとって、このバンダナはまさにそんな一本です。歴史へのリスペクトを込めながらも、過去を模倣するのではなく、それ自身の物語を持ったオリジナルのデザインです。
